Ag-Rec: Modernizing A Century-old, Agriculture Recommendations Platform Through the Agstack Open-source Consortium - Gaurav Ramakrishna & Brandy S. Byrd, IBM
For more than a century, rural farmers and communities have relied on recommendations from cooperative extension services around the globe. For many, these recommendations are a trusted source of information that could mean the difference between a successful harvest or a meager one. Rural farmers have used manuals or printed PDF files to find recommendations for increasing crops, mitigating disease, and understanding pest management. In fact, farmers commonly ride their tractors in the fields, while studying recommendations that are published by the extension service in a printed manual. As members of the Agstack consortium, Call for Code, Clemson University, and community members collaborated to develop an open-source framework that uses real data, first contributed by the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service. The Ag-Rec framework consists of a Postgres database, which will enable cooperative extension services to upload their agriculture recommendation datasets. The framework has a user-friendly interface that extension services around the world can contribute to and use to access existing data. Come join this interactive session to learn about the architecture of the framework, the APIs that drive its function, and the technology roadmap for the next version of Ag-Rec.

An Open Source Exploration of a Semantic Structure for Climate Accounting - Dr. Christiaan Johannes Pauw, Nova Institute & Marcus Alex-Ivan Howard
As the world accelerates towards decarbonisation, the need for climate impact accounting at scale becomes more pressing. One of the greatest challenges in this regard is the description, comparison and aggregation of impact claims due to the multitude of existing accounting and reporting standards. The reconciliation and aggregation of these claims, in the interest of climate impact “bookkeeping” at a global scale, requires a common underlying semantic structure – which currently does not exist. The Standards Working Group (Standards WG) of the Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group (CA2-SIG) aims to lay out such a semantic structure. Working from the premise that agents engage in activities that impact environments, the WG is actively searching out standards to distill their semantic structures into an ontology that most adequately describes these elements and the relationships between them. The ontology is by design open source, collaborative, dynamic and technology agnostic. The presentation will provide an overview of the WG's work to date, introduce the latest version of the basic ontology, and demonstrate the ontology's application by means of an exemplary use case.

Building a Standards-based Open Ecosystem for DPU/IPU Technologies - Kris Murphy, Red Hat; Dan Daly, Intel & Paul Pindell, F5 Networking
A new class of cloud and datacenter infrastructure referred as Data Processing Unit (DPU) or Infrastructure Processing Unit (IPU) is emerging into the marketplace. Organizations value having a well-balanced and optimized infrastructure across their data centers and the hybrid cloud and would like to utilize this new infrastructure, creating an opportunity to develop a fully programmable open source-based model across software and hardware devices. To help facilitate that development and create a vibrant ecosystem, Open Programmable Infrastructure (OPI) project was created. The objective of the project is to foster a community-driven, standards-based, open ecosystem for next generation architectures and frameworks based on IPUs, DPUs, or even switches. Delivering on the Promise of Decentralization: Why Open Source Development is Essential for Blockchain - Hart Montgomery, The Linux Foundation
Blockchain is being increasingly adopted as the trust infrastructure for critical systems around the world. At its core, a blockchain serves as an information store with decentralized trust: even if some constant fraction of participants in a blockchain act maliciously, the blockchain will still retain its ability to be a truthful store of information. This decentralization is blockchain’s main advantage and usefulness over traditional databases. But how decentralized are major blockchain systems today? What do the consensus algorithms underlying blockchain security imply about decentralization? How must governance and development of blockchains be done to maximize effective decentralization as well? In this talk, I will explain the core relationship between decentralized trust and blockchain in a way that relates to both cryptocurrencies and permissioned blockchain systems like those built with Hyperledger technologies. I will explain how blockchain governance typically works (also in a decentralized manner!) with a variety of examples. Finally, I will explain why fully open source development processes are the only way to ensure proper decentralization of blockchains and how we go about these processes in the Hyperledger Foundation.

Demystifying WebAssembly, Through the Eyes of A Beginner - Shivay Lamba, Layer5
WebAssembly is a replacement for JavaScript! C++/Rust developers can now code front-end applications! WebAssembly is faster than JavaScript! WebAssembly! WebAssembly! How many times do you hear these statements? Me, a lot. In this talk I collect the most popular myths about WebAssembly and try to uncover the truth through the eyes of a beginner. Normally Web Assembly mainly associated as a technology that changes the web as we know it by allowing us to compile other languages to run in browsers, along with many other uses and benefits. This is completely true! But Web Assembly is a lot more! Today Web Assembly is used outside the browser to build performant applications on the edge, mobile devices etc. Discover what WebAssembly is (and isn’t), how to use WebAssembly, and how it affects the way we program for the web and beyond! I will also show a simple demonstration to showcase how to use Web Assembly with JavaScript

How Open Source Software and Digital Public Goods Enabled Quick Pandemic Responses in Sri Lanka and Larger Digital Cooperation - Prajakta Kuwalekar & Nathan Baleeta, Digital Public Goods Alliance
In March 2020 Sri Lanka identified high tourist inflow as a challenge to preventing the spread of COVID-19. This made gathering information on incoming passengers a priority. In response, DHIS2, a free and open-source health management information system (HMIS) was deployed. DHIS2 is used in more than 100 countries making it the largest HMIS in the world. It is also a digital public good (DPG). DPGs are open-source software, data, AI models, standards, and content that do no harm by design, and help attain the Sustainable Development Goals. Mentioned in the UN Secretary General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, DPGs are a growing point of interest for governments seeking digital solutions to address development challenges given that they can easily be adopted, customized, and scaled. In response, Norway, Sierra Leone, UNICEF, and iSPIRT founded the Digital Public Goods Alliance to help support their development and discovery. During this session, the DPGA's Prajakta Kuwalekar (DPG Standard Product Manager) and Nathan Baleeta (Technical Specialist) will highlight the impact of DPGs throughout the pandemic. Sri Lanka's response will be used to convey the importance of utilizing standards and best practices which enabled their efforts to be replicated by other governments.

Ethical Artificial Intelligence to Advance Welcoming Communities and Identify Potential Communication That Degrades Community Welcomingness - Sean Patrick Goggins, CHAOSS Project and the University of Missouri
The CHAOSS Project's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion projects, including Event Badging, Refinement of Best Practices, and other efforts aim to make projects more welcoming for all newcomers and remove barriers to participation for individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups. What happens when a project builds a successful track record for attracting newcomers, but through a series of unfortunate communication events, alienates some group of newcomers in a way that compels them to leave? Such events have occurred in open-source software in the past, and they share the properties of a) not being visible at the time of occurrence, and b) requiring substantial effort to mitigate when they do occur? What if community managers were aware of such incidents as they were occurring, and could mitigate community attrition events through swift action? How do the CHAOSS Project's Augur Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Computational Linguistic toolset make help community members? Most importantly, who will help a community manager apply these advanced technologies in a way that is fair, and ethical for newcomers, and project maintainers. CHAOSS brings technology -- What people increasingly desire more than metrics -- and community to realize this goal.
